Before The Rain
With rain in the forecast this afternoon, I decided to get out in a kayak early before the motorized boats get going. The lake was still with a gentle wind and I spend some time watching Eastern Kingbirds work the trees along the shoreline.
So it was calming to just paddle, not worrying about technique, to let the mind wander and just enjoy the solitude and the birdcalls. Of course, the passage overflight of a flight of F-35’s from Burlington brought me back to reality. They are noisy!
As I toured the coastline of the lake, I spotted once again one of the Bald Eagles that are nesting here and then came upon this Great Blue Heron fishing for breakfast. I carefully got the kayak close enough for some shots, but also was able to not disturb the bird at all.
There are quite a number of Canada Geese that can be rather bothersome to camp owners but this morning some of them were feeding in the reeds at the north end of the lake.

Then, I caught up with the four Common Loans who have made this month so interesting for us. Here are a few shots from the kayak of the adults and the youngsters who have been delighting us during the time we’ve been here.
Paddling on quiet morning is great for the body and the mind. It’s fun to have some good looks at birds from a different perspective while balancing a paddle, a backpack, and a new camera.
